      What is Indie Music?

What is Indie Music?

Although many people associate the terms 'indie music' with a certain sound and type of music - usually involving a young band that play guitars - the actual type of music is not where the term originates.

In fact indie music is short for 'independent music' and describes a band or artist that prefers to produce their own music rather than be signed to a large record label that is likely to try to dictate their sound.

Therefore, these small labels that produce and publish records for indie artists run lower budget enterprises. As a result they do not have the means to compete against the major pop chart acts, although as we all know, sometimes indie bands break through into the mainstream.

Like so many great musical developments, indie music is thought to originate in the 1960s. The Velvet Underground could maybe be seen as the first real indie band, producing all their own material and creating a unique sound away from the major labels. Their sound is still considered unique and their album Nico is considered a classic.

In the 1970s and 1980s many indie bands were known as 'progressive rock' bands. The 1980s were all about pop music and even the more alternative music was commercial. It was the rock bands that broke away from the group and became the indie bands of the day.

This came before the 'alternative' scene in the 1990s. Grunge was a kind of indie music from the US and the likes of Nirvana and Pearl Jam were huge chart hits in the UK, bringing indie music and culture almost to the mainstream. Other US indie bands were also popular around the early 90s, like Pavement and Green Day. In the US, the music these bands make is referred to as 'college rock' because it's the music of the college radio stations.

Today indie music may be slightly easier to define as so much has become commercial instead of truly indie. Current indie music tends to sway towards a mixture of rock, folk and acoustic music and there is still a hug following for the genre, especially as a result of the resurgence in the popularity of folk music in recent years.

Finding great new indie music is more difficult now in some ways as there is so much commercial pop music in the charts, in the shops and in the media in general. However, music fans have more control than ever and have the entire indie world at their fingertips through the internet. Websites like Amazon, Sounds2buy and Last.fm allow you to browse a wide range of indie music and many offer reviews and recommendation that enable fans to discover new acts.

If you find an interesting sounding band online, simply download their track, have a listen and you can discover the next great indie band without even leaving your sofa.

How to sell your music Online

In the age of the internet, budding musicians have a number of ways to offer their music for sale to exactly the audience they wish to attract - and beyond. From ringtones and MP3 downloads to CD sales, you can easily harness the power of the web to market your band's or your own individual musical offerings to potential fans all over the world.

Selling your music online as MP3 downloads

Many contemporary bands agree that the most straightforward and cost-effective way to sell their music online is by offering fans MP3 downloads of their songs. The first step is creating a web page either on your own website or on a social networking hub like MySpace or Facebook.

You can then simply upload your tracks and make them available for download - an embedded media player is a must, so people can preview your songs. At www.Sounds2Buy.com, we offer a professional platform for musicians whose tracks are available to download at competitive prices.

Visitors to your page can then opt to buy your music after checking out your tracks, your band's biography and any photos or footage of gigs you've chosen to feature on your site or fan page. For transactions to be possible, you'll either need an ecommerce facility on the website or a link to a website that can take payments on your behalf and deliver the MP3 files of your tracks. It is now possible to create an effective marketplace for your music with notably low overhead costs, considering you won't have to pay for (or ship) CDs and packaging.

As Lily Allen and the Arctic Monkeys proved, using networking sites to get your music heard can lead to some amazing results. In our era of interactivity, music fans like the personal touch and appreciate when bands make the effort to communicate with them and accept their feedback!

Selling your music online by promoting a CD

After MP3 downloads, selling music on a CD is the next most popular option for aspiring bands. Again, a secure checkout with straightforward payment options is a must. If you create an input form for shipping information on your website or other online portal, you can automate the process of shipping by printing mailing labels.

Sites like PayPal have this capability built into their secure checkout systems, making your marketing life easier and letting you get on with all the other work involved in producing music and getting it heard by as many people as possible.

Using the ringtone market to sell your music online

Ringtones aren't all about the latest dance tunes or annoying cartoon character's assaults on the ears of the public - they can be a great way to get your sounds out there. If you install some straightforward audio editing software onto your computer, you'll be able to put together a short clip featuring a catchy rhythm or set of lyrics you're proud of.

There are now a plethora of sites which will convert your clip into the appropriate formats for the numerous mobile phone models owned by music fans. You just have to choose a site where users can share ringtones for sale, upload your snippet and interested fans will soon be singing along to your tune every time their phone rings.

Check out Sounds2Buy for more tips on selling your music and getting your tracks heard by thousands of people on the web!

      How to Write Lyrics

For most bands or artists, lyric writing is a necessity. Musicians playing classical music or those happy to keep their music purely instrumental can do without lyrics, but for almost all popular music, lyrics are the heart of the track.

The lyrics are the emotional aspect of a song and can speak to your audience, reaching them on a level that the music tunes alone may not be able to reach.

So...it's time to stop putting it off and get your creative juices flowing. Here are some basic processes involved with writingsong lyrics:

Choosing a Subject

The best lyrics come from the heart, so it's worth thinking about the subjects that matter the most to you. Don't be afraid to get personal here. Literally, anything goes - whether you've just had a really bad day, or you've lost the love of your life, or your first child has been born - all these life experiences can translate into fantastic song lyrics and therefore, fantastic music.
Writing a melody

It helps to write the words to fit an existing melody, simply because you then know what will fit the song and the rest of the music. However, some people do prefer to write music lyrics first and then write a melody to fit the music lyrics. Either way is good - just do what feels right for you and your band.

Some people are lucky enough that melodies just pop into their head, while others have to sit with their instrument, or with musicians, for hours until they get the basic notes down. It doesn't matter which category you fall into as a melody is something worth spending time on and it will make or break your song.

Writing verses

It's a good idea to write at least five verses and either use them all or choose the best ones for your song. The verses usually have the same melody so you will soon get into the rhythm of the piece and the lyrics will flow. View this process like writing poetry.

Writing the chorus and the middle eight

The chorus is often repeated after each verse so you only need to write it once. The melody for the chorus will be different from the verses and should stand out as the chorus. Be as experimental or as traditional as you like but make sure it hits a note that will stay with your listeners after they have finished listening to your record. Remember: the choruses that stick in your head are often the simplest.

The middle eight is the toughest part, in terms of music lyrics, to write as the melody is likely to be different from the verses or the chorus and it will be short - at maybe a line or two - acting as a bridge between two parts of the song.
Recording time!

It's very important to record you or your singer singing your lyrics along with the melody. This part of the process will allow you to listen back to what you've written which will enable you to hear if anything sounds wrong or awkward. Simply tidy up any of these loose ends and you have your first song!

The role of music in our lives

Music has many roles in human life, not least its role as a means to express ourselves and our emotions. Music also helps us to escape our normal lives and immerse ourselves in a world where our imaginations take control.

Music can have a physical impact on humans. It can help us to relax or can make us energetic and happy. It has a huge effect on our moods and has a greater impact on the human psyche than most other forms of culture.
Very early forms of music, usually in the form of drumming and voices, were used by our ancient ancestors for similar reasons why we use music today. We use it to celebrate, to mark occasions, to escape the stresses of normal life and to take a break from our daily routines.

As a result of the huge range of uses for music and the wide variety of emotions it evokes, the human race has developed a diverse variety of music. From a classical concert, to a live dance DJ or an Indian wedding band, it never fails to impact our lives and make an impression on us as humans.
Although we are all familiar with the effect music has on our emotions and moods, some research has offered a greater insight into this phenomenon

One piece of research looked at the effect music had on fish swimming in a tank. The study found that the beats of the music changed the way the fish swam, with the fish's swimming patterns corresponding with the beats of the different songs.
Music as therapy is another interesting area for those involved in the music business. Anand Avinash, founder of a Neuro Linguistic Consciousness workshop, points out that music has been used as a kind of therapy for centuries, if not millennia. He says, "the mystics and saints from ancient to modern times have shown how music can kindle the higher centres of the mind and enhance quality of life."

He uses the example of chants and mantras used to reach another state of consciousness among holy people like monks and among others who use chanting as a meditation technique.
In addition to its role as a stress-reliever, it can also be used in therapy. Conditions including dementia, depression, dyslexia and post-traumatic stress disorder can be helped through musical therapy, according to some doctors. Children with learning difficulties and problems with coordination can also benefit hugely from music therapy.
Even if you have no use for music in a therapeutic sense, and do not see it as a way of relieving the stresses and strains of life, most people can get something from music. And by this we do not just mean classical, spiritual or meditative music. People can benefit hugely in terms of their mood and their perspective from listening to their favourite pop records, heavy metal music or hip hop tracks.

Let's face it, it's hard to think of anything else that speaks to humans the way music does. After all, we make the music and it is a uniquely human creation and one we should all cherish.

Here is a brief guide to UK Music copyright laws for musicians and for recorded music

Here is a brief guide to UK copyright laws for musicians and for recorded music.

How do I go about copyrighting the music I have written?

Well, as soon as you have written a piece of music, it is automatically your copyright. However, in order to be able to prove this, you need to prove the date it was made. There are several ways to do this but the simplest is to send a copy of your recording to yourself in recorded post (the kind you have to sign for).
Alternatively, you may want to take the CD to a lawyer, who will be able to verify that it was written and recorded by that date.

Can I sample others music in my own songs?

Although there is a common misconception that you can sample up to 5 seconds of someone else's music without permission, this is not true. In addition, however much you change the sample to sound different, it's still against UK copyright law. So the message when it comes to sampling is get the permission of the copyright holder first!
Getting permission can be a difficult process, but there are clearance agencies that you can employ to get permission for you, which could be worthwhile for a major project.
There are some pieces of music that you can sample, including those that have been released under open content deals, but always read the license first to cover your back.

Can I cover someone else's record?

You can create a cover version but to perform or distribute it you have to get permission. Although this sounds daunting, most live music venues already have licenses for the copyright of music created by MCPS/PRS members. Therefore, before covering a record at a gig, make sure the original artist is a member.

So all recording artists have to register with the MCPS/PRS?

Since a new piece of legislation was passed, artists are now able to choose anyone or any organisation to collect royalties for them and represent their music. Artists can even collect their own royalties to ensure they keep all the money themselves.

I've heard the term 'creative common license', what is it?

A creative commons license works alongside copyright but covers music that is free. This is useful when you want to give your music away for free but also want to set out the terms of your copyright on the work.

What about DJ mixes of other people's track?

Again, seek permission from the original artist before you distribute any DJ mixes you have created yourself from other's music. Some websites claims that you can upload your mixes without worrying about copyright. But you need to check this thoroughly before doing so.

How to make a track copyright

This is simple, before distributing a track or sending out a demo, simply print "© 2009 Your Name" on the sleeve or disc sticker. This conveys that the track is copyright but is yet to be published.
If you wish to create a "©" via Windows, just keep your finger on "Alt" and type with the right number keypad "0169", now release "Alt", this is very useful to know!

      What is Royalty Free Music?

That's just free music, right? Well, there's a little more to it than that but, to the layman, that's what it is.

Royalty-free music is production music that can be used over and over again once the initial purchase payment has been made. Until the advent of royalty-free music, and for as long as there have been copywrite laws ,production music had to be licensed each time it was used as part of a production or broadcast. Every time a television show wanted to use a piece of music, a payment had to be made to its creators. Time consuming, yes, and often very expensive.

Royalty-free music, however, has revolutionised this way of working, giving production companies and film houses elaborate archives of sounds and music that they can dip in to without either contravening copywrite or having to fork out a princely sum. The advent of websites wanting music in the background or incidental musical instrumental accompaniments has increased demand for this even more.

The tunes involved are specifically recorded to be royalty free music in very specific ways. The music is created by top industry composers, many of whom have been specifically trained in the art of creating background music and free music instrumentals. They create different pieces to suit different atmospheres and also to evoke different eras and contexts. This often means that one purchased piece of music can be used, with out drawing too much attention, in a multitude of works.

Royalty Free Music
is definitely the way forward when you do not want to spend thousands of Dollars on unnecessary high licensing cost. Royalty Free Music is used all around the world and most commonly for Multimedia applications, videos, radio commercials, TV, presentations, music on Hold and Flash Games. Their artistry means that the resultant music is compatible with all types of media: with TV, with film, with radio and computer games. .Buying Royalty Free Music is also fantastic especially for Film Producers and Directors which would like to lower down their licensing cost.

Now, let's speak about the different types of Royalty FREE Music Licenses, You will find Royalty Free Music that has been registered with a Collecting Right Society(PRS, ASCAP, BMI, SESAC...) by the copyright holder, and you will also find Royalty FREE Music that is NON PRS(Not registered with any Collecting Right Society) registered, the PRS is the UK collecting right society. what is the difference between PRS Registered and NON PRS registered Royalty FREE Music? When you buy Royalty FREE Music that has been registered with a collecting Right Society you may have to fill in a cue sheet, Cue sheets are returned yearly to the performing right societies which in return pay the artists and publishers.

It is very important to fill in Cue sheets when you play your purchased Royalty FREE Music so the artists/publishers always receive their money. Always contact your local Collecting Rights society if you wish to know more about it.

Now who should fill in Cue sheets?

Any production that is broadcast on satellite, television, cable, radio or even distributed in theaters must fill in Cue sheets, always double check with your collecting rights Societies, rules and laws might be slightly different from Country to country.

At Sounds2Buy we can provide you with a library of selections of music from a wide range of today's newest and most innovative artists. Browse our music library to see whether there's something to suit your needs.
